Ranj Singh and The Discriminators

We’re getting the band back together!

Yup, we’re re-forming Ranj Singh and The Discriminators and working on our chops, since we’ll be playing a big show on September 28th, opening for Jann Arden! Stay tuned for more details!

Ranj

The Discriminators originally formed as a 5-piece band in late 2007, with Ranj on vocals and 12-string guitar, Chris Dufault on guitars and bass, Bojan Bugarinovic on sitar, bass, and guitars, Dan Huget on his funky electric violin, and later Greg Stuart on percussion. They performed at many venues including The Heritage Grill, Dragon Boat Festival, The Roxy, The Cultch, etc.

The group started gaining major attention after performing at 7 hockey games during the 2010 Winter Olympics, performing for thousands of people. While en route to perform as a duo at the 2010 Paralympics, Ranj and Chris were involved in a car accident and everything came to a halt, and in this business, momentum is everything. Despite not being able to perform as often following the accident, the band managed to get together and record and release Found A Way Home in 2011.

It was in February 2012 that the band played their finale show at The Heritage Grill. The injuries and depression had taken a toll on Ranj and he ended up retiring the band. It was his decision alone to do so, and in his words “the worst musical day of my life”.

Fast forward to 2024 and an opportunity arose thanks to Options Community Services' launch of a second Affordable Housing Initiative. An opening act was required for a fundraising concert featuring Twin Flames and headliner Jann Arden: Ranj pitched the idea of reuniting his band after 12 long years, and the boys all unanimously and enthusiastically said yes!

Vancouver's own Chris Dufault began playing guitar at 8 years old. A veteran of the club scene, he has played over a thousand shows across BC — not including the additional 1,000 shows with Ranj, both with The Discriminators and as a duo. Chris has shared the stage with artists such as Nickleback, Pure, and Shari Ulrich. Chris has been performing with Ranj since 2006 and helped launch Ranj's career of performing originals.

Bojan Bugarinovich

Bojan Bugarinovich is a multi-instrumentalist and a composer based in the Vancouver area. Having grown up in Eastern Europe, his studies have been greatly influenced by the music of the Balkans and the Mediterranean. Bojan has played in many jazz bands and combos, as well as folk groups and rock bands. A bass guitar and sitar player, Bojan's curiosity about eastern music has led him to learn new instruments, and to work on layering folky textures over a western folk-rock base.

Dan Huget is a classically trained violinist who overcame that trauma by going electric, and then impressively creating and stretching the enchanting sounds of a traditional violin through his pedal-board. He loves improvising with others and failing that, will improvise on on his own with his “wall of sound” loopers as “Neo-Vio”.

Greg Stuart

Greg Stuart, a long-time part of Vancouver's music scene as a professional drummer, is also an accomplished songwriter, engineer, and producer. Greg has toured with artists as diverse as Frank Mills & Bo Diddley, and has participated in countless festivals and theatre productions. It was a chance meeting in 2006 while hosting an open mic that led to Ranj obtaining a publishing deal due to the demo recorded at Greg's studio.
